Leading Custom and Semi-Custom Shipyards Worldwide

This article is part of the Wealth Ranking Luxury & Heritage Rankings Series published by Ranking News. It evaluates leading shipyards engaged in full-custom, highly individualized and platform-based semi-custom superyacht construction for private owners, family offices and their professional representatives.

Superyacht construction represents one of the most technically demanding forms of luxury manufacturing. A major custom yacht combines naval architecture, structural engineering, propulsion, energy management, exterior and interior design, advanced communications, security, hospitality infrastructure, classification compliance and long-term operational support within a single vessel.

Unlike yacht manufacturers organized primarily around standardized model families, custom-superyacht shipyards develop projects around the requirements of a particular owner. A new yacht may begin with a blank sheet of paper or with an established naval platform that is substantially reconfigured through owner-specific architecture, engineering, equipment and interior design.

These projects frequently require several years of development, construction, outfitting, testing and commissioning. They bring together the shipyard, exterior and interior designers, naval architects, classification societies, technical consultants, project managers, captains, crew specialists and owner representatives. The shipyard is responsible not simply for manufacturing a hull, but for coordinating an unusually complex design and delivery ecosystem.

The category includes both full-custom shipyards and highly customized semi-custom builders. Full-custom projects are developed individually from their earliest technical and architectural stages. Semi-custom superyachts generally use a proven engineering foundation, hull form or technical platform while permitting extensive changes to interiors, layouts, exterior areas, systems and operational specifications.

This distinction is based on the construction model rather than yacht length alone. Although 24 metres is commonly used as a starting point for the broader superyacht sector, not every manufacturer building above that length belongs in this ranking. Luxury-yacht brands centered principally on recurring production models are assessed separately in the Top 20 Luxury Yacht Builders 2026 ranking.

The present article also includes specialist sailing-superyacht shipyards. Large custom sailing yachts require a distinctive combination of naval architecture, structural engineering, rig development, weight control, deck systems, performance analysis and interior integration. They therefore form an important part of the wider custom-superyacht industry.

What Defines a Superyacht Builder in This Ranking?

A shipyard considered for this category generally demonstrates several of the following characteristics:

  • Specialization in full-custom or highly individualized superyacht construction
  • Responsibility for complex naval architecture, engineering and systems integration
  • Dedicated infrastructure for large-yacht construction and outfitting
  • Experience coordinating international designers, technical advisers and classification societies
  • The ability to execute owner-specific layouts, interiors and operational requirements
  • An established record of completed yachts or substantial projects under construction
  • Current engineering, production and project-management capability
  • Experience with steel, aluminium, composite or advanced mixed-material construction
  • Meaningful involvement in commissioning, testing and post-delivery support
  • Recognized standing among owners, captains, brokers, designers and project managers
  • Relevance to custom motor yachts, explorer yachts, sailing superyachts or highly customized platform-based vessels

The category does not require every project to begin from an entirely blank technical foundation. Proven platforms can support highly individualized yachts when the level of owner-specific engineering, architecture and systems work is substantial.

Category Boundary

This ranking is designed to prevent the category confusion that can arise when production yachts and custom superyachts are evaluated as though they follow the same construction model.

The following distinctions were applied:

  • Production and model-range yacht manufacturers are covered primarily in the Top 20 Luxury Yacht Builders 2026.
  • Full-custom shipyards are included where individual project execution forms the central part of their identity.
  • Semi-custom superyacht builders are included where established technical foundations support extensive owner-specific design and engineering.
  • Diversified yacht groups are assessed at brand or division level where their construction activities fall into materially different categories.
  • Sailing-superyacht specialists are included because their projects require comparable levels of engineering, customization and project integration.
  • Refit activity supports a shipyard’s profile but is not sufficient by itself for inclusion in a new-build ranking.

Under this approach, Sanlorenzo Yacht Division is considered in the Luxury Yacht Builders ranking, while Sanlorenzo Superyacht is assessed here. Amels is evaluated as the semi-custom and full-custom superyacht brand operating within Damen Yachting. Admiral is assessed as a distinct superyacht brand within The Italian Sea Group.

Market Overview

The global superyacht construction sector entered 2026 with more than 1,000 yachts of 24 metres and above on order or under construction. Although project counts have moderated from their recent peak, the order book remains historically substantial, and the average technical and dimensional complexity of new projects continues to increase.

Europe remains the principal center of large custom-superyacht construction. Germany and the Netherlands hold especially strong positions in the upper end of the sector, supported by advanced engineering, highly developed subcontractor networks, large construction facilities and extensive experience with technically demanding vessels.

German shipyards are particularly prominent in ultra-large motor yachts, specialist engineering and complex project integration. Their work frequently involves large displacement vessels, extensive technical redundancy, demanding acoustic standards, security systems and highly developed operational infrastructure.

The Netherlands combines full-custom engineering, advanced yacht design, semi-custom platforms and specialist sailing-yacht expertise. Dutch shipyards are represented across the category, from Feadship and Oceanco’s large custom motor yachts to Amels’ platform-based construction and the specialist sailing work of Royal Huisman and Vitters.

Italy provides the greatest breadth of the major European yacht-building nations. Italian shipyards operate across full-custom, semi-custom, explorer, performance and design-led construction. Benetti, CRN, Sanlorenzo Superyacht, Baglietto, Tankoa, Admiral, Codecasa and Rossinavi demonstrate the diversity of the country’s large-yacht manufacturing base.

Türkiye has developed into an increasingly important superyacht-building center. Bilgin, Turquoise and Mengi Yay combine expanding facilities with steel and aluminium construction, international design partnerships and increasingly substantial project portfolios. Their development reflects the broader growth of Türkiye’s specialist marine-manufacturing ecosystem.

The market is not defined solely by the number or size of yachts delivered. Custom-superyacht construction depends heavily on project governance, engineering continuity, supplier coordination, workforce depth and the ability to manage complex decisions over several years. A shipyard’s institutional capability is therefore as important as its annual output.

Post-delivery support has also become more significant. Large yachts require continuing technical assistance, warranty coordination, maintenance planning, modernization and periodic refit. Shipyards able to support vessels throughout a long ownership cycle offer an important form of continuity beyond the initial construction project.

Industry Trend — 2026

Increasing Project Scale and Complexity

Yacht length remains visible, but length alone no longer provides a complete measure of project difficulty. Gross tonnage, internal volume, system density, propulsion architecture, hotel loads, tender capacity, aviation facilities, security requirements and intended operational range can make two yachts of similar length fundamentally different engineering propositions.

Large contemporary yachts may incorporate multiple pools, wellness areas, cinemas, laboratories, medical facilities, large tenders, submersibles, extensive water-sports equipment and highly specialized communications systems. Integrating these requirements without compromising stability, weight distribution, circulation or maintainability has become a central shipyard capability.

Full-Custom and Platform-Based Construction

Full-custom construction remains the defining model at the upper end of the market. It allows the naval architecture, exterior form, interior organization and technical package to be developed around a single owner’s requirements.

At the same time, platform-based semi-custom construction has become increasingly sophisticated. A proven technical foundation can reduce repeated engineering work, support more predictable construction planning and provide operational knowledge from earlier units. Owners can still commission substantially different interiors, exterior areas and onboard functions.

Amels, Heesen, Benetti, Sanlorenzo, Baglietto, Bilgin and Admiral illustrate different interpretations of this approach. Their programs range from clearly structured model families to adaptable engineering platforms that support extensive architectural change.

Hybrid Propulsion and Energy Management

Hybrid propulsion, battery-supported hotel loads, diesel-electric systems, improved shore-power integration and intelligent energy management are receiving greater attention. These technologies can reduce noise and vibration, improve efficiency at selected operating profiles and allow periods of quieter onboard operation.

Alternative fuels and fuel-flexible engineering are also being examined, particularly for projects with long development horizons. Adoption remains dependent on fuel availability, storage requirements, classification standards, safety considerations and the intended operating profile of each yacht.

Environmental performance is increasingly assessed across the whole vessel. Hull efficiency, weight, insulation, air-conditioning loads, heat recovery, water production, waste management and equipment selection all affect energy use. Sustainability is therefore becoming an engineering discipline rather than a decorative design theme.

Explorer and Expedition Capability

Explorer yachts remain an important part of the custom-superyacht sector. Owners increasingly seek vessels capable of longer passages, remote cruising, cold-climate operation and extended periods away from conventional marina infrastructure.

These projects require more than expedition-inspired exterior styling. Genuine explorer capability depends on range, storage, redundancy, machinery access, hull construction, tender handling, crew organization and the ability to operate safely in challenging regions.

Cantiere delle Marche occupies a specialist position in this area, while several other ranked shipyards undertake long-range and explorer-oriented projects at larger scales.

Interior Architecture and Connection With the Sea

Superyacht interiors are increasingly conceived as complete architectural environments rather than collections of formal rooms. Flexible spaces, large glazing, improved sightlines and adaptable circulation allow yachts to respond to different patterns of family use, entertainment and extended residence.

Beach clubs, opening hull sides, fold-down terraces, water-level lounges and large aft decks have become central design elements. The engineering challenge is to provide these features while preserving structural integrity, watertightness, machinery access and safe operation.

Owner privacy and crew efficiency remain equally important. The strongest layouts provide discreet service routes, effective technical access and clear separation between private, guest and operational spaces.

Continued Importance of Custom Sailing Yachts

Large sailing yachts occupy a specialized but influential position within the sector. Their construction requires close integration between hull design, appendages, rigs, sail-handling systems, deck equipment, structural loads and weight distribution.

Performance expectations must be reconciled with comfort, noise control, interior volume and long-distance capability. Hybrid systems and energy recovery are also becoming increasingly relevant to sailing-superyacht development.

Royal Huisman and Vitters represent different but complementary expressions of this specialist field. Both demonstrate how low-volume sailing-yacht construction can contribute disproportionately to engineering and design development.

Digital Infrastructure, Security and Project Governance

The digital systems aboard large yachts are becoming more extensive. Communications, navigation, entertainment, automation, access control, cybersecurity and remote technical monitoring now require coordinated system architecture.

Project governance has consequently become more formalized. Owners and their representatives increasingly expect structured design approvals, configuration management, documentation, testing procedures and clear responsibility across shipyard and supplier teams.

This places greater importance on experienced project managers, systems engineers, commissioning specialists and technical documentation. A visually successful yacht must also remain understandable, maintainable and operable after delivery.

Lifecycle Support and Refit

The relationship between a shipyard and a yacht increasingly extends beyond delivery. Periodic surveys, machinery replacement, interior changes, energy-system upgrades, regulatory work and major rebuilds may all be required over a vessel’s operational life.

Shipyards with established refit and lifecycle-support capabilities can retain technical knowledge of their vessels and assist with complex modernization programs. This is particularly relevant as owners seek to improve the environmental and operational performance of existing yachts rather than replacing them prematurely.

MethodologyCore Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Top 20 Superyacht Builders 2026, a shipyard or yacht-building brand was generally required to:

  • Demonstrate specialization in custom or highly customized superyacht construction

Tier III recognizes established specialist shipyards whose focused portfolios contribute distinctive engineering, design or construction capabilities to the international superyacht sector.

These companies may operate at a smaller scale or within a narrower project range than the larger Tier I and Tier II builders. Their inclusion reflects meaningful custom-project expertise rather than annual output.

(Alphabetical order)

Codecasa

  • Headquarters: Viareggio, Italy
  • Founded: 1825

Codecasa is one of Italy’s longest-established family-run yacht builders. Its roots in Viareggio extend to 1825, and the company remains under the direction of the founding family’s descendants.

The shipyard specializes in steel and light-alloy motor yachts generally ranging from approximately 30 to 70 metres. Its portfolio includes traditional displacement yachts, faster aluminium vessels and full-custom projects developed around individual owner requirements.

Codecasa is associated with technically disciplined construction, restrained exterior styling and interiors designed for long-term private use. Its yachts often favor balanced proportions and enduring materials over highly trend-dependent visual treatment.

The company’s longevity has allowed it to maintain substantial knowledge across engineering, metal construction, outfitting and post-delivery support. Its continued development of 43-metre and larger projects demonstrates ongoing relevance within the custom motor-yacht sector.

Codecasa was included in Tier III in recognition of its two centuries of shipbuilding heritage, family continuity, full-custom capability, steel and aluminium expertise and established contribution to the Viareggio yacht-building tradition.

Mengi Yay Yachts

  • Headquarters: Tuzla, Istanbul, Türkiye
  • Established: 1964

Mengi Yay Yachts is a Turkish custom-yacht builder whose roots extend to 1964. The shipyard has developed from traditional wooden yacht construction into a broader operation working with wood, steel, aluminium and composite materials.

Its current portfolio includes custom motor yachts, explorer-oriented vessels and recurring yacht families that support extensive owner personalization. The Virtus program provides one example of how the shipyard has translated accumulated construction experience into adaptable technical foundations.

Mengi Yay entered 2026 with several substantial projects under construction. These included yachts around 47 to 53 metres, the launch of a 52.5-metre explorer yacht and continuing work on a 52.6-metre project designed with an international studio.

The company combines in-house design and construction knowledge with external naval architects, interior designers and technical partners. Its expanding Tuzla facilities support new construction, interior work and refit activity.

Mengi Yay Yachts was included in Tier III in recognition of its long operating history, active multi-project program, custom-construction expertise, range of building materials and growing contribution to Türkiye’s international superyacht sector.

Rossinavi

  • Headquarters: Viareggio, Italy
  • Origins: 1980
  • Rossinavi brand established: 2007

Rossinavi developed from the metal-construction expertise of the Rossi family, whose shipbuilding work began in 1980. The Rossinavi brand was established in 2007 to consolidate that experience within a full-custom superyacht operation.

The shipyard builds steel and aluminium yachts developed around individual owner briefs. Its projects frequently combine expressive exterior design, highly personalized interiors and close collaboration with international architecture and design studios.

Rossinavi has placed increasing emphasis on hybrid propulsion, diesel-electric systems, battery-supported operation and energy-management technology. Its project portfolio includes conventional motor yachts, explorer-oriented vessels and hybrid catamaran concepts.

The 53-metre Heed, launched in 2026, demonstrates the yard’s continuing work in fast-displacement custom yachts. Other recent projects illustrate a willingness to explore substantially different hull forms and propulsion arrangements rather than maintaining a single stylistic formula.

Rossinavi was included in Tier III in recognition of its full-custom philosophy, metal-construction background, design-oriented project portfolio, hybrid-technology development and established position within Viareggio’s specialist yacht-building community.

Turquoise Yachts

  • Headquarters: Istanbul, Türkiye
  • Shipyards: Istanbul and Kocaeli, Türkiye
  • Founded: 1997

Turquoise Yachts is a Turkish custom-superyacht builder with experience in steel and aluminium motor yachts from approximately 40 to 90 metres. The company was established in 1997 through the combination of existing Turkish yacht-building expertise.

Its two principal facilities support different stages and scales of construction. The Istanbul operation provides access to an established marine-manufacturing area, while the Kocaeli facility offers capacity for particularly substantial hulls and projects.

Turquoise yachts are developed in collaboration with international exterior and interior designers, naval architects, project managers and owner representatives. The portfolio includes displacement motor yachts, explorer-influenced vessels and individually styled large custom projects.

The shipyard’s work demonstrates Türkiye’s ability to combine local metal-construction and engineering capability with internationally organized design and project teams. Its completed fleet and continuing construction program provide an established foundation within the country’s growing large-yacht sector.

Turquoise Yachts was included in Tier III in recognition of its custom-yacht experience, dual-site infrastructure, international design relationships, steel and aluminium capability and sustained contribution to Turkish superyacht construction.

Vitters Shipyard

  • Headquarters: Zwartsluis, Netherlands
  • Founded: 1990

Vitters is a family-owned Dutch shipyard specializing in large custom sailing yachts. Its projects are developed around individual sailing, cruising and architectural requirements rather than standardized production models.

The yard’s work requires detailed coordination of hull structures, appendages, rigs, sail-handling equipment, propulsion, energy systems, hydraulics, weight distribution and custom interiors. These disciplines must operate together without compromising sailing performance, safety or onboard comfort.

Vitters has built performance cruisers, classic-inspired yachts and large contemporary sailing vessels. Current projects include yachts incorporating diesel-electric systems, battery-supported operation and extended periods of quiet onboard use.

The shipyard operates through a focused in-house team supported by specialist subcontractors and suppliers. This model allows Vitters to assemble project-specific expertise while retaining direct responsibility for the completed yacht and its technical integration.

Vitters Shipyard was included in Tier III in recognition of its sailing-yacht specialization, engineering depth, custom-project capability, performance heritage and respected position within the international sailing-superyacht community.

Remarks

The shipyards recognized in this ranking represent several distinct approaches to superyacht construction. These include ultra-large German motor yachts, Dutch full-custom engineering, Italian design-led projects, platform-based semi-custom construction, explorer yachts, expanding Turkish shipyards and specialist sailing vessels.

The tiers reflect relative position within this defined category. They consider engineering capability, custom-project expertise, construction infrastructure, design execution, current project activity, historical contribution and international sector relevance.

The ranking does not imply that every Tier I shipyard is suitable for every project. A shipyard experienced in 100-metre motor yachts may not be the appropriate choice for a performance sailing yacht, just as a specialist explorer builder may offer capabilities that are more relevant to remote cruising than those of a much larger yard.

Shipyard selection depends on the intended yacht size, hull material, propulsion architecture, cruising plans, delivery framework, interior requirements, technical complexity, service expectations and the working relationship between the owner’s team and the shipyard.

This ranking does not constitute a technical inspection, purchase recommendation, construction guarantee, legal assessment, financial assessment or prediction of future resale value. Prospective owners should undertake independent technical, contractual, legal and financial review before entering a yacht-construction agreement.

Corporate structures, active projects, ownership arrangements and construction programs can change. The ranking reflects the shipyards’ established profiles and information considered for the 2026 edition.
